Turkey closely following the progression of events in Sulaymaniyah, Iraq
In the city of Sulaymaniyah, Iraq, the Iraqi Kurdish forces have arrested Lahur Sheikh Jangi, a prominent Kurdish opposition figure and former co-president of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK). Jangi is now the leader of the People's Front.
The arrest, which took place at the Lalezar Hotel, was the result of hours of armed clashes. According to PUK media reports, a group of fighters loyal to Jangi surrendered to PUK forces before the arrests were made. However, Jangi himself surrendered during the clashes, but his brother Polad was injured and arrested.
The clashes resulted in the unfortunate loss of three security forces, including one from the special operations branch, one from the anti-terrorist services, and one 'Commando.'
Foreign Ministry Spokesman Oncu Keceli has made a statement regarding the situation on a social media platform, expressing concerns for Iraq's stability and the safety of Turkish citizens in the region. In response, Keceli confirmed that the Erbil Consulate General has made contacts with relevant local authorities and ensured necessary measures have been taken for Turkish citizens in the area.
Jangi is a member of the Talabani family, a notable political dynasty in Iraqi Kurdistan. His arrest is expected to have significant implications for the political landscape in the region.
